When running a classroom discussion, it’s important to kick off with a starter that is engaging as well as informative, something that can help your students form an opinion on the issue and give them some knowledge to bring to the discussion.

Stimulus materials can be anything from relevant objects, news clippings, films, even witty songs. Planning a discussion around nanotechnology? Show your students this great new Punk Science film – Nanotechnology song! And in Healthy Living, Punk Science explore the neurotransmitters that make us happy (and raise questions about fair testing!)

And if you want to get a few ideas for making your science pop, check out How to Punk your science… Having perfectly messy, artfully tousled hair is not a prerequisite.

Finally, we invited a group of scientists to try out our Mystery Boxes activity- see what they thought about it in this film.

Enjoy!

Hello all and happy New Year!

Come and see the Science Museum at ASE Annual Conference 2011

We are kicking off 2011 with a bang at the ASE Annual Conference in Reading, where we will be running a workshop with Mystery Boxes, and another great activity from our course. In fact, we even had a bunch of scientists try out Mystery Boxes, and this film shows what they thought of it.

In other exciting news, in our session you will also catch the EXCLUSIVE ASE PREMIER of Punk Science’s Nanotechnology Song! You will not want to miss this… but if you do, well, you’ll also find it right here for your (and your students!) viewing pleasure.

Punk Science also explore the brain chemicals that make us happy in this film (good for post-holiday resolutions. Yeah right). Finally, if you want some ideas for spicing up your science, check out Punk Science’s top tips.

So where can you find us at ASE? Our session will run 11:30-12:30 on Saturday 8th Jan, in the Palmer suite 108. Places are limited so make sure you get there on time.

If you just can’t make it to that, you will also find the Science Museum on Stand C1 in the Exhibition Marquee, for the duration of the conference (5th-8th Jan). So come and say hello, and find out more about our great resources, courses and visits.

See you there!

Hot off the press! We have just launched a brand-new series ‘Genetics and Brain Science’ on the Science Museum’s Educators website, where you can find a range of free KS3 and KS4 classroom activities. The resources support you in teaching contemporary science and How Science Works, and relate to our very popular Who am I? gallery.

To start off, we would like to present two activities that allow your students to explore the science of genetics:

Identical twins exploring the Who am I? gallery

1. In ‘Do you want to know a secret?’ your students work in research groups and discuss the issues surrounding genetic testing. Depending on the choices the groups make at the end of the session, they may find out the secret that their box holds…

2. By adopting a Thing in our fun game Thingdom, your students will learn about genetic inheritance and selective breeding. Can they breed new Things that have all the characteristics they want? Use the teaching film and student sheet to bring the Things alive in your classroom!

Watch this space…we will add more ‘Genetics and Brain Science’ resources shortly. And, as always, if you try these out, we’d love to hear about it! Talk.science@sciencemuseum.org.uk
